COLUMBUS, Texas — The Columbus Volunteer Fire Department rescued a badly injured worker early Friday after a construction accident on I-10.

A giant trackhoe and traffic control barrier rolled off a westbound bridge into a Columbus pond around 3 a.m.

The worker suffered severe leg injuries and had to be pulled from the water and carried up the embankment by firefighters.

“This operation involved a complex and hazardous rescue under extreme conditions,” CVFD said.

The worker was airlifted to a level 1 trauma center. We are working to learn their condition.
