Texas City facility experiencing high SO2 emissions

The Valero facility was “experiencing an upset” on Saturday, according to Texas City officials.

TEXAS CITY, Texas — A stretch of road near a Valero facility in Texas City was closed as a precaution on Saturday after higher-than-normal sulfur dioxide emissions were detected.

According to the Texas City Emergency Management Facebook page, the closure is along Loop 197 from FM 519 to 605 South Loop. It’s unclear how long the road will be closed.

They said the Valero facility is “experiencing an upset” and they’re actively monitoring the air quality. They said that as of 7 p.m., nothing harmful had been detected.

This is a developing situation, and updates will be added to this article when they become available.
