Texas Bowl conference tie-ins uncertain as 20th anniversary approaches

With six months until the annual college football event’s 20th anniversary matchup, the future of its conference tie-ins has not been finalized.

HOUSTON — What do Ray Rice, Patrick Mahomes, Robert Griffin III, Myles Garrett, Leonard Fournette and Case Keenum all have in common?

They all played in the Texas Bowl in Houston over the past 20 years.

Additionally, most of them played in either the Big 12 Conference or Southeastern Conference, the Texas Bowl’s two conference affiliations since 2013. With six months until the annual college football event’s 20th anniversary matchup, the future of its conference tie-ins has not been finalized. The Texas Bowl’s deals with the Big 12 and SEC expire after the 2025 season.

“We couldn’t be more thrilled with our relationship with the Big 12 and the SEC to date. The last 12 years have been game changing for Houston,” said Texas Bowl Executive Director David Fletcher. “As the landscape changes, we’re going to continue to visit with them and with the broader college football universe on ultimately what the best situation for our community and our partners is.”
