Texas AG investigators shoot, kill suspect at Fort Worth apartment complex, officials say

Investigators with the Texas Office of the Attorney General were serving an arrest warrant to 36-year-old Matthew Cruz for indecency with a child.

FORT WORTH, Texas — One person was killed Tuesday after a shooting involving investigators with the Texas Office of the Attorney General, according to officials.

The shooting happened at the 35 West at Champions Circle Apartments in the 3600 block of Outlet Boulevard in Fort Worth near Texas Motor Speedway.

A news release from the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) identifies the person killed as 36-year-old Matthew Cruz. DPS says investigators with the Texas Office of the Attorney General were serving an arrest warrant for indecency with a child when the shooting occurred.

According to DPS, investigators located Cruz hiding inside an apartment and encountered him in a confined area. Authorities say Cruz ignored commands and was armed with a knife when investigators opened fire, striking him. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

No officers or members of the public were injured.

Fort Worth police previously said the officer involved was not one of their own, and Northlake police also confirmed the shooting did not involve one of their officers.

According to the Texas Attorney General’s website, the Fugitive Apprehension Unit, part of the Criminal Investigations Division, is tasked with tracking down and arresting violent offenders, parole violators, and sex offenders who fail to register. Its regional offices are based in Austin, Houston, and Arlington, and the unit works alongside local law enforcement during its investigations.

DPS says the Texas Ranger Division is investigating the incident at the request of the Attorney General’s Office. The case remains under investigation, and no additional information has been released.
