Teen arrested after revolver found inside hot tub at Texas NCA cheer camp

Police say a revolver was recovered from an indoor hot tub by hotel staff.

GRAPEVINE, Texas — Police arrested a 17-year-old after a revolver was found in a hot tub during an NCA cheer camp at a popular North Texas resort, just months after a fight caused a mass panic at an NCA competition in Downtown Dallas.

The Grapevine Police Department confirmed that on June 8, around 10:15 p.m., officers responded to the Gaylord Texan Resort, where hotel staff had recovered a revolver from the bottom of an indoor hot tub. Police say a 17-year-old suspect was arrested for disorderly conduct, discharge or display of a firearm, and nobody was hurt.

That same weekend, the National Cheer Association (NCA) was holding a camp at the resort. A spokesperson for the Varsity Spirit-run organization confirmed in a statement that the incident happened after camp activities had concluded for the day.

“We are aware of a reported incident that occurred after instructional activities concluded for the day, during a time that campers are under the supervision of their designated coaches or chaperones,” the statement read. “We will continue to cooperate with local authorities as they investigate the matter.”

Earlier this year, a fight amongst parents at the NCA All-Star National Championship in Downtown Dallas at the Kay Bailey Hutchison Convention Center led to a false report of a shooting and mass panic at the event. Just two days before the gun was found in the Gaylord Texan hot tub, families from the March incident filed a lawsuit against Varsity Brands and other event operators, alleging they failed to provide basic security measures at the competition.
