DALLAS — Being Texan speaks for itself.
“People know when you’re from Texas, you don’t need to say it,” said Dan Bradley, founder of Bullzerk, a screen-printing and gift shop in Dallas.
Nevertheless, Bradley has done his best to put it in words.
His designs are loud, but as flooding ravaged central Texas last weekend, he fell silent.
“You don’t really know what to say,” Bradley said.
How does a Texan describe such heartache?
Eventually, Bradley landed on a single word.
Bradley saw tragedy, but he also saw that when floodwaters rise, so do Texans.
Whether it was the Fort Worth twins who’ve collected nearly $8,000 from their lemonade stand or the Dallas chef who rushed to Kerrville to cook for first responders and victims.
“I had to come,” Jeff Rockow said. “I had to come.”
With nature at its worst, Bradley saw Texas at its best.
“The average person who’s sitting at home wants to help,” he said.
To provide the way, Bradley put the word “united” on a shirt. It reads: ‘United in Love for the Hill Country.’
The shirts are now for sale online and at all Bullzerk locations. All the proceeds will be donated through WFAA’s parent company, the Tegna Texas Flood Relief Fund.
Bradley said so many people are desperate to help, he and his team can hardly keep up.
“When we come together we can help,” said customer Cayce Shelton.
“I’m proud to be a Texan anyway, but when I see this, that just gets to my heart,” customer Maria Hernandez said.
For Bradley’s customers, being Texan means being united. And at times like this, they wear it proudly.
