Suspect in Grand Prairie stole police car, led officers on high-speed chase

GRAND PRAIRIE, Texas — A person stole a police car and led officers on a high-speed chase that reached speeds of more than 100 mph before ending in a crash in North Texas, officials say.

Police initially were called about a reckless driver on I-20 in Grand Prairie, and the suspect stole a Grand Prairie police car, officials say. It’s unclear how the suspect got control of the police car.

The suspect, who was handcuffed the entire time, led police on a high-speed chase that reached speeds of more than 100 mph before officers pit-maneuvered the car, and the police car crashed and rolled down an embankment in the area of I-30 and Westmoreland Road, according to officials.

The suspect was injured in the crash and transported from the scene, police say. The suspect is expected to face theft of a motor vehicle and reckless driving charges, officials say.

A second police unit was also sideswiped during the crash, police said.
