HOUSTON — A man has been charged with the July 30 shooting death of a contractor who was gunned down outside a convenience store just east of Highway 288.

The deadly shooting happened around 12:40 a.m. Wednesday, July 30, on Calumet Street, between Southmore and North MacGregor Way.

The victim was a contractor who stopped at the store to pressure wash kitchen equipment.

A man in his early 30s was shot and killed early Wednesday morning while working outside a convenience store near Houston’s Third Ward, according to the Houston Police Department.

The deadly shooting happened around 12:40 a.m. on Calumet Street, just east of Highway 288.

Omar Marzouk, 38, is charged with murder in the shooting death of 32-year-old Jimmy Arevalo, but he’s still on the run, according to HPD.

Homicide detectives said Arevalo stopped at the store to pressure wash stainless steel kitchen equipment.

Surveillance video obtained by KHOU 11 from a witness shows the truck approaching the victim as he works. The shooter walks up to Arevalo and the two appear to exchange words. After pushing the victim, the killer pulled out a gun and fired at point-blank range. KHOU 11 has chosen not to show the moment the gunman opens fire due to the graphic nature of the video.

He drove off in a gray Toyota Tundra.

The victim’s brother, also a contractor, was inside the store and ran outside after hearing the shots. He found his brother covered in blood and called 911. Arevalo died at the scene.

We don’t know yet if Marzouk and the victim knew each other, and the motive remains unclear.

Anyone with information on Marzouk’s location or this case is urged to contact the HPD Homicide Division at 713-308-3600 or Crime Stoppers at 713-222-TIPS (8477).
