Storms topple massive tree onto pickup truck in Spring area neighborhood

A massive tree crushed a pickup truck in a Spring-area neighborhood after overnight storms swept across Houston and knocked out power to thousands.

HARRIS COUNTY, Texas — Overnight thunderstorms that moved across the Houston area left behind scattered damage in parts of north Harris County, including a massive fallen tree that crushed a pickup truck in a Spring-area neighborhood early Wednesday morning.

KHOU 11 crews in the Inverness Forest neighborhood near Doral Street found large tree limbs and trunks down after the storms moved through overnight. One massive tree fell across a neighborhood street and landed on a white pickup truck parked nearby.

“The good news in all of this is that we’re not seeing too much extensive damage,” KHOU 11’s Deevon Rahming reported from the scene Wednesday morning. “But we are seeing some tree limbs and tree trunks … that are down.”

The truck appeared heavily damaged, with the roof dented and doors damaged after the tree came crashing down. Rahming described the pickup as “a total loss.”

Neighbors were seen earlier in the morning trying to cut apart the fallen tree to keep it from blocking the street before debris was eventually pushed to the side of the roadway.

It was not immediately clear whether the tree fell because of lightning or strong winds from the storms.

The storms also knocked out power to thousands across the Houston area. According to CenterPoint Energy, more than 23,000 customers were without power Wednesday morning following the overnight storms.

KHOU 11 crews said the fallen tree and damaged truck were among the most significant storm impacts they had seen while driving around north Harris County early Wednesday.

In Pasadena, storm-related power outages also impacted emergency communications on Wednesday morning.

The Pasadena Police Department said its non-emergency phone lines were down because of a power outage tied to the storms. Officials said efforts were underway to restore service as quickly as possible.

Police said anyone needing emergency or non-emergency assistance from police, fire or EMS should call 911 while the outage continues.
