Shooting at Bug’s Bar leaves 2 dead, including bar owner

Witnesses say up to two gunmen fired into a large crowd from a passing car.

HOUSTON — Numerous evidence markers on the ground illustrated the violence that erupted around 11:45 Sunday night outside Bug’s Bar on Dixie Drive when those in line for a party were suddenly forced to run for their lives.

“Seven are injured, two of them are deceased,” said an HPD officer on the scene.

Someone shared video with us that showed the crowd waiting to get into the club just before Houston Police said one or two suspects opened fire from a passing car.

“Probably one of the scariest times in my life,” said party promoter Daniel Aremu.

Aremu said he’s the one that promoted the party which was moved to Bug’s from another location.

“Like, I’ve only ever been in a situation like this once,” said Aremu.  “But nothing to where someone actually passed away.”

One of the two people who died was identified by family and friends as Paul “Junebug” Stevens, who owned the club and was also a beloved barber.

Aremu didn’t believe anyone was specifically targeted and claimed the party had security checks in place.

“No warning, no foreshadowing of what to come, just violence,” said Aremu.

Another shooting at the club in March took the life of a 21-year-old man.

And while neighboring businesses say these incidents are alarming, it is unclear if Bug’s has been among those targeted by HPD in recent efforts to curb violence at nightclubs and other businesses.

Right now, there’s no clear descriptions of the suspects in this latest incident, although witnesses said they were in a silver or gray sedan.
