Just one mile per hour over the posted speed limit in a school zone can cost you $254
The first day of school is right around the corner, and it’s important to make sure you’re following all the laws to keep students safe.
Follow the posted speed limit in active school zones. You’ll know when the speed limit is active because the speed limit sign will have yellow flashing lights to alert drivers.
The speed limit in most school zones is typically 20 miles per hour, but can be as slow as 15, so be prepared to slow way down and pay close attention at both intersections and crosswalks when you’re near a school zone.
School campuses are active before and after school, and kids may be rushing across the street to a non-designated pickup zone.
Violating school zone speed limits not only puts students at risk, it can also come with a heavy fine.
Going just one mile per hour over the posted limit in general could cost you $224. But in a school zone, the city of Houston’s most recent fine schedules say that ticket would actually cost you $254.
Beyond that, you’re looking at higher fines. This is how much you’d be fined if you speed through a school zone.
- 6-9 mph over speed limit: $274
- 10-14 mph over speed limit: $289
- 15-19 mph over speed limit: $309
- 20-29 mph over speed limit: $334
- 30 or more mph over speed limit: $359
And don’t forget to put down that cell phone. Fines for using a handheld device while driving in a school zone could come with a $200 fine.
These fines can be more in different parts of Southeast Texas.
