San Jacinto College considers biomanufacturing training facility in TMC

San Jacinto College officials said they are exploring options to make the center for biotechnology happen.

HOUSTON — As multiple biotechnology manufacturing companies are eyeing a home in Houston, San Jacinto College has secured millions in state funding to boost the sector’s talent pipeline.

The $338 billion budget the Texas Legislature sent to Comptroller Glenn Hegar on June 2 includes $10 million for the college’s Center for Biotechnology at Generation Park, which is set to open this fall to give students hands-on experience in biotechnology manufacturing careers.

But that figure could have been higher, as a proposed rider would have authorized the creation of a Center for Biotechnology in the Texas Medical Center’s Helix Park campus.

The TMC and SJC are still exploring opportunities to make the center for biotechnology happen, said Christopher Wild, vice president and vice chancellor for biotechnology at San Jacinto College.

“We’ll be exploring philanthropic dollars, and the next session is certainly a possibility for that particular project,” Wild told the Houston Business Journal in an interview.
