San Antonio Spurs associate coach Sean Sweeney has agreed, in principle, to become the next head coach of the Orlando Magic at the end of the Silver and Black’s current playoff run, ESPN reports.

The 41-year-old Sweeney, whose basketball IQ and experience developing defensive talent have made him one of the hottest names in the NBA’s coaching market, will replace Jahmahl Mosley.

Mosley was fired after the Magic fell to the Detroit Pistons last month in the first round of the playoffs.

Indeed, plenty of observers have picked up on Sweeney’s ability to turn the Spurs into a defensive powerhouse. During the playoffs, star player Victor Wembanyama credited the coach for the team’s defense, which has held opponents to fewer than 100 points in seven postseason games.

Sweeney spent just one season on the Spurs’ bench. The team lured him away from the Dallas Mavericks last offseason.

The Spurs will take on the Oklahoma City Thunder this Saturday in Game 7 of the Western Conference Finals. Tipoff is at 7 p.m., and the game will air on NBC.
