Traffic signals at Richmond and the West Loop were either flashing red or not working at all until KHOU 11 reported on the issue.
HOUSTON, Texas — Traffic signals at two busy Richmond Avenue intersections that had been malfunctioning for weeks have been repaired following a KHOU 11 News report that highlighted the dangerous conditions drivers faced.
The signals at Richmond Avenue and the feeder inside the West Loop, as well as those at Richmond and Post Oak just outside the West Loop, are now functioning properly. A driver told us they had either been flashing red or were completely non-operational for nearly a month.
The malfunctioning signals had created chaotic three and four-way stops that frustrated drivers and created dangerous conditions. Driver Mabel Amaya, who had been dealing with the problematic intersection for four weeks, described the situation as “a nightmare.”
The dangerous conditions led to multiple crashes, including a dramatic rollover accident captured on security cameras at a nearby Vape Time location. Store manager Brianna Carlin had expressed serious safety concerns about the ongoing issues.
“It’s really bad,” Carlin said. “Even I’m scared to come to work. There’s been so many crashes, a cop has gotten hit, cars have flipped over.”
The lights were repaired on Friday.
Officials remind drivers that they can report traffic signal issues to 311, and TxDOT has indicated it doesn’t hurt to contact them as well if there’s uncertainty about which agency is responsible for a particular signal.
