Seniors at a Houston apartment complex face broken elevators and new A/C issues, with no repair timeline in sight.
HOUSTON — More residents at a southwest Houston senior apartment complex are speaking to KHOU 11 about ongoing problems with broken elevators — and now, air conditioning issues.
At Creekbend Gardens off South Gessner, residents say they’ve been dealing with two out-of-service elevators for weeks, one of which has been broken for more than a year. For seniors with mobility challenges, the outage means long, painful climbs up and down the stairs.
“You have to go upstairs. You go down. It’s terrible,” said resident Gladys Monzon, who lives on the third floor and has a bad knee.
She told us she’s lucky to have family help, but others may not be as fortunate.
“My daughter brings the water and food, she helps me, but these other people — they don’t have help,” Monzon said.
Last week, KHOU 11 spoke with residents, including former Houston Oilers player Bobby Simon, who needed EMS to carry him down the stairs to dialysis appointments. Now, more tenants are voicing concerns.
“They need to do something about it soon,” said resident John Jefferson. “People are going to be falling down and stuff.”
On top of the elevator issues, residents say they recently lost air-conditioning in parts of the building. A note posted on the management office window mentioned problems with the building’s “central cooling tower system.”
When KHOU 11 visited Creekbend Gardens on Tuesday, no one from building management answered our knocks at the front office door. On Monday, emails and voicemails left with the Retirement Housing Foundation (RHF), which operates the complex, were not returned.
Houston Public Works confirmed an inspector from the Houston Permitting Center is scheduled to visit the property Tuesday.
