Residents of Independence Heights rejoice as the city clears a persistent illegal dumping site after KHOU 11’s intervention.
HOUSTON — A large illegal dumping site in Independence Heights, located just behind Booker T. Washington High School, has finally been cleared after neighbors say they spent weeks trying to get the city to respond.
Frustrated, resident Jolynn Elizondo reached out to KHOU 11 News for help, saying trash at the corner of N. Main and East 43rd Street had been piling up for some time, despite multiple complaints to Houston’s 311 system.
“No response, no confirmation of my submission, silence,” Elizondo said. “We deserve to have a clean area to walk safely with our families, with our pets.”
The debris stretched along the sidewalk and grassy lot, everything from old food and furniture to shopping carts, tires, and mattresses. Elizondo said the site posed a safety concern, especially with school set to start next week.
“We have a bunch of kids in the neighborhood that walk to school to Booker T. Washington,” she said. “They’re going to avoid this route because of the smell and the trash.”
On Wednesday afternoon, shortly after KHOU 11 visited the site and began reporting on the issue, City of Houston Solid Waste crews arrived and cleaned up the pile in under an hour. Whether that cleanup was previously scheduled or prompted by recent complaints remains unclear.
KHOU 11 has reached out to the City of Houston’s Solid Waste Management Department. They provided the following statement:
“Yes, our department has received reports of illegal dumping at the corner of 43rd and Main Street. This location has experienced recurring dumping activity and has been under ongoing monitoring, our crews were already aware of the issue and had scheduled the area for cleanup. The site has since been cleared.”
Residents say they’re grateful for the cleanup but hope this isn’t a one-time fix.
“It’s not being regularly monitored, so if it does get cleaned up, it just happens again,” she said. “Maybe within a week we’ll start seeing trash again.”
In response to longer-term efforts to prevent illegal dumping, Solid Waste Management said:
“Solid Waste Management continues to monitor the area and will continue to work the residents who actively report illegal dumping. We appreciate residents using 3-1-1 to report these issues and encourage them to stay vigilant in their neighborhoods to assist in capturing details from violators, such as license plates, photos, videos, etc.
KHOU 11 also contacted Houston ISD, given the dump site’s proximity to the high school campus. A district representative later visited the area and took photos. In a statement, HISD said:
“HISD’s top priority is the health and safety of all students. The District was made aware of concerns over trash and debris in the area near Booker T. Washington. The trash has been cleared, and we remain in communication with the City of Houston to ensure the safety and well-being of our students as they return for the start of the new school year.”
We also spotted a mobile surveillance trailer stationed on the same lot. KHOU 11 has asked the city whether the trailer is being used to monitor illegal dumping and is awaiting a response.
Residents say the now-cleared lot wasn’t the only issue. Just across the street, another pile of trash, along with a discarded mattress in an empty lot, remained visible Wednesday afternoon.
