AUSTIN (KXAN) — The Texas Longhorns women’s basketball team went north of the border to pick up a win Wednesday, taking out the Puerto Rico U23 national team 84-45 at the GLOBL Jam tournament in Toronto.
The GLOBL Jam is an international tournament featuring teams with players aged 23 years and younger. The Longhorns are representing the United States against Puerto Rico, Canada and Brazil.
Kyla Oldacre posted a double-double for the Longhorns with 17 points and 11 rebounds in about nine minutes of playing time before leaving with a lower-body injury. Justice Carlton led all scorers with 18 points on 6-for-11 shooting. She also pulled down eight rebounds.
Three transfers made a big impact for the Longhorns in the opener. Ashton Judd, a transfer from Missouri, knocked down four 3-pointers on her way to 15 points with eight rebounds. Breya Cunningham, who last played at Arizona, scored nine points with nine rebounds. Teya Sidberry, a Boston College transfer, chipped in 10 points with six rebounds.
Bryanna Preston was one point off a double-double, dishing out 11 assists to go with nine points. Rori Harmon chipped in three steals and Madison Booker had four rebounds.
Former Texas guard and Cedar Park native Gisella Maul suited up for Puerto Rico, scoring 12 points on 4 of 13 shooting. Maul transferred to Cal after her freshman year at Texas, playing for the Golden Bears last season.
The Longhorns forced 34 turnovers with 22 steals and held Puerto Rico to 28% shooting. Texas led 21-5 after the first period, and then exploded for 37 points in the second period to take a 58-14 halftime lead.
The Longhorns made it to their fourth Final Four last season, setting a program record with 35 wins and a share of the Southeastern Conference regular season championship in their first season.
Texas takes on Canada at 7 p.m. Thursday, and the game will be streamed on ESPN+. The Canadians pounded Brazil 104-56 in an opening-round game. Texas rounds out pool play against Brazil on Saturday with the medal round Sunday.
