Rare black bear sighting in Savoy, Texas

Biologists confirm a black bear sighting in Savoy, Texas.

SAVOY, Texas — A black bear was spotted in Savoy on Wednesday, according to biologists with the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, who confirmed the sighting.

TPWD said black bears are a rare and protected species in Texas and that sightings may increase this time of year as young bears begin to leave their mothers and explore new territory, sometimes ending up in unusual areas.

According to TPWD, black bears are not typically aggressive. If you spot one, TPWD urges you to stay calm, keep a safe distance, and never run or attempt to feed the animal. The agency also advises residents to secure common attractants such as garbage, pet food and bird feeders. Given space and limited access to food, bears will usually move on, officials said.

Sightings should be reported to a local TPWD biologist or Texas Game Warden. TPWD said reports help the department track bear activity and allow biologists to offer assistance in bear-proofing property, including the use of electric fencing.
