Random gunfire has SW Houston neighborhood on edge again

Since March, we’ve been telling you about the Sharpstown neighborhood where troublemakers drive around, fire guns, and then leave. It stopped, but not for long.

HOUSTON — Silence was shattered along Gulfton Street early Tuesday evening as a neighbor’s Ring camera rolled.

Two shooters fired about a dozen rounds in an empty lot before driving away in a green-colored minivan.

“My neighbor was out grilling some chicken and, you know, one stray bullet and he could be dead,” homeowner Sean Bond told KHOU 11.

Bond’s cameras also captured the sound of gunfire and then a glimpse of the van.

Fortunately, he said HPD was very responsive.

“I live one street away, and the police beat me here,” he said.  “So, they came immediately.”

He took photos of officers on the scene where they collected bullet casings.

“I don’t know why they like this lot,” Bond said. “Seems like there must be information out there that this is a good place to do it. They should really not, because we have gotten pretty good about getting videos of them.”

Two juveniles were charged with illegal discharge of a weapon related to previous incidents we’ve covered; we’re told this latest case may involve juveniles as well.

Meanwhile, HPD’s been on heightened alert since the gunfire got our attention and that of Councilman Edward Pollard.

“The fact is, whenever a gun is discharged, it’s extremely violent, it’s extremely scary,” Pollard previously stated.  “And the residents here deserve to have as much protection as possible.”

At this point, Bond believes anyone should think twice about firing weapons here again.

“Probably do it somewhere else or don’t do it at all,” said Bond. “Because if you do it here, you’re going to get caught.”
