Pope Leo XIV names newest Bishop of Austin diocese

AUSTIN (KXAN) — Early Wednesday, Pope Leo XIV appointed Daniel E. Garcia as Austin’s sixth bishop.

According to the Diocese of Austin, Garcia grew up in Waco and Cameron, Texas, and was ordained as a priest for the Diocese of Austin on May 28, 1988.

The former Bishop of Austin was Joe S. Vásquez, who was appointed in March 2010. He was appointed the archbishop of Galveston-Houston in March 2025.

The selection of the new Bishop was previously put on hold following Pope Francis’ death.
