Two groups fired at one another before a prison officer heard the gunshots.
BRYAN, Texas — Authorities are investigating a shooting near the Bryan Federal Prison Camp that resulted in no one being injured. The incident occurred Saturday morning and involved two groups exchanging gunfire.
According to the Bryan Police Department, officers were notified at 1:08 a.m. of multiple gunshots in the 700 block of Dansby Street. A preliminary investigation revealed that individuals from the 1000 block of E. 21st Street fired toward a group sitting on the front porch of a residence on Dansby Street.
The people on the porch then returned fire toward the first group, according to the police statement.
The west fence line of the Bryan Federal Prison Camp runs parallel to the 1000 block of E. 21st Street. Police say a prison guard on duty reportedly heard the gunfire and approached the fence line. The guard saw someone involved in the altercation actively shooting and then shot their gun.
Authorities reported that bullets struck a home and a vehicle in the 700 block of Dansby Street, as well as several cars in the 1000 block of E. 21st Street.
Bryan PD is asking anyone with information about the shooting to call 979-209-5300. The Federal Bureau of Prisons has launched a separate investigation into the portion of the incident involving its employee. That inquiry is being coordinated with the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s Bryan Office, which can be reached at 979-731-0600.
Officials have stressed that the shooting is unrelated to the Bryan Federal Prison Camp’s operations or any inmates housed there.
