Concerned neighbors contacted KHOU 11 News to try and help get the overgrown lot on Houston’s northeast side cleaned up.
HOUSTON, Texas — Residents who reached out about an overgrown lot in northeast Houston say they’re concerned about more than its unslightly appearance.
They say the lot at Linda Vista Road and Tremont Street, east of Wayside, is blocking traffic.
“It’s always been a problem,” Earl Bingley, who lives next door, told KHOU 11. “Over the years, there’ve been numerous accidents at this particular intersection in our community.”
Bingley shared photos of the most recent crash that he and others believe was caused by a blind spot because of tall weeds.
It’s an issue another neighbor told us she’s routinely encountered.
“Because when you get to the intersection, you’re unable to see the next car coming from the opposite way,” she said.
Another nearby resident recently whacked some of the weeds himself with a machete.
“This lot has been here for a while,” Craig Hurts said. “People used to cut it, and then they stopped and stuff like that.”
According to the Harris Central Appraisal District, an investment group is the property’s current owner.
We found a violation notice hidden in the brush that was dated June 12 with an order to mow the weeds.
Houston Public Works Director Randy Macchi sent us a statement that said the notice will be reissued.
“The property owner was not properly notified after the notice was found in the bushes. We are providing an updated notice today,” the statement said. “The violation of high weeds has seven days to mow and remove. Inspectors will follow up to verify that the lots have been cut and cleared. Property owners will receive a citation at this point. Further violations will result in an abatement to mow the yard at the city’s expense. The property owner would be responsible for the reimbursement.”
Meanwhile, neighbors don’t care who ultimately gets it done.
“They need to come and clean that property,” Bingley said.
Residents are encouraged to report issues like overgrown lots to 311.
That’s something neighbors told us they’ve done in this case.
