Oscar’s Taco Residence to close after 60 -plus years of offering puffy tacos on Southwest Side

SAN ANTONIO — After serving its signature puffy tacos for more than 6 decades, Oscar’s Taco Residence on the Southwest Side will close its doors following month.

Proprietor Alex Pruneda informed TheTXLoop that the last day of service will be June 28

In spite of the closure, Pruneda said he really feels thankful to have had the opportunity to offer the community for so long.

He called the moment bittersweet, claiming the dining establishment at 705 Barrett Area, near South Zarzamora Street, was an area where several memories were made.

He likewise shared his admiration for his workers.

“We appreciate it,” Pruneda said. “We would not be where we are today without them. They are the foundation of this organization.”

When asked why the dining establishment is closing, Pruneda said the city purchased the building.

He indicated an intended railroad overpass at South Zarzamora Road and Frio City Road, which he said affected his organization.

Construction on the task is set up to start in the spring or summertime of 2026 and is anticipated to be finished by 2028

Pruneda stated the city at first desired the restaurant vacated by May 15, however granted an expansion after he wrote a letter requesting more time.

“I have 32 workers, and I intended to let them understand in advance,” he stated.
