Only 19 horses will be racing during the 152nd edition of the Kentucky Derby on Saturday. Here are the remaining competitors and their odds.
LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Only 19 horses will be racing in the 152nd Kentucky Derby on Saturday evening, after a last-minute scratch of a fan-favorite horse.
The Puma has been battling a swollen leg from a skin infection and was ruled out less than 12 hours before the post time. The last-minute change also meant the deadline passed for Corona de Oro to join the field off the also-eligible list.
The race is expected to begin around 6:57 p.m. Eastern on Saturday, May 2.
The race allows a maximum of 20 horses to compete on the 1.25-mile track at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky. The purse is $5 million, with $3.1 million awarded to the first-place finisher.
The Puma is the fourth scratch from the field this week, with one coming each of the past four days. Silent Tactic was ruled out Wednesday, Fulleffort on Thursday and Right to Party on Friday, with Great White, Ocelli and Robusta getting in.
Renegade remains the favorite after opening as such on the morning line a week ago.
What to do if your bet gets scratched
Many horses get injured or get pulled out the week of Derby as they practice on the track. But fans have been able to place bets on the horse race all week. So what happens if that horse scratches?
Many betting apps, including TwinSpires, say it is ultimately at the track’s discretion whether or not a scratch will be refunded.
Churchill Downs offers the following policy when it comes to betting on scratched horses: “If scratch(s) occur prior to “official” of the 1st leg: all bets containing such scratch(s) will refund.”
One of the most common types of bets in horseracing is a “straight bet,” where your bet pays off if your horse wins, places or shows. If your horse scratches in this case, you would be refunded.
