One of Houston’s most recognizable bridges now has a new name

HOUSTON — A man who helped open doors for generations of students is now being honored across one of Houston’s biggest landmarks.

Local leaders, community members, and the Harris County Toll Road Authority unveiled the new sign for the Dr. Richard A. Tapia Bridge along the Houston Ship Channel.

County leaders approved the name change earlier this year to honor the Rice University professor who helped inspire generations through his work in STEM and education. Leaders say the bridge will serve as a lasting reminder of the paths that Tapia helped create.

“Just like the bridge, he was transcendent,” said Robert Treviño, executive director of the Harris County Toll Road Authority. “He knew no limits and made sure his extraordinary level of excellence for generations. That’s what luminaries do. They shine brightly and inspire us all to be better and do better.”

Dr. Tapia was 88 years old.
