Nuts, trail mix sold at Target included in recall over possible salmonella contamination

If you have one of the affected products, you can return it to where you purchased it for a refund or replacement.

WASHINGTON — Shoppers are being urged to check their pantries after a popular trail mix product was included in a recall due to possible salmonella contamination.

The voluntary recall of Good & Gather trail mix was announced by John B. Sanfilippo & Son and published Wednesday, May 6, by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. The recall also includes certain snack mix products sold under the Fisher, Southern Style Nuts and Squirrel Brand labels through retail stores, online sellers and QVC.

Specifically, the recall includes Good & Gather Mexican Street Corn Trail Mix sold at Target stores nationwide. No illnesses linked to the recalled products have been reported, the company said.

The company said the recall stems from a separate voluntary recall issued by California Dairies involving dry milk powder that may have been contaminated with salmonella.

According to the announcement, the recalled snack products were made with a seasoning blend supplied by a third party that contained the recalled dry milk powder.

John B. Sanfilippo & Son said the seasoning tested negative for salmonella before production, but that the company issued the recall “as a precautionary measure.”

What should you do if you have recalled trail mix

Consumers are advised not to eat the recalled products and instead return them to the place of purchase for a refund or replacement.

According to the FDA, salmonella infections can cause serious and sometimes fatal illness, particularly in young children, older adults and people with weakened immune systems.

Symptoms may include fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. In severe cases, the infection can spread into the bloodstream and lead to more serious complications.
