NBA Texas teams are donating over $2 million to help communities affected by deadly flooding in Texas.
HOUSTON — The NBA and its Texas teams are joining forces to support communities devastated by historic and deadly flooding across the Texas Hill Country over the Fourth of July weekend.
In a social media post Monday, the NBA, the National Basketball Players Association (NBPA), and Texas’ three NBA franchises, the Houston Rockets, Dallas Mavericks and San Antonio Spurs, announced they are committing more than $2 million toward immediate and long-term relief efforts.
As of Monday afternoon, the flooding has killed at least 102 people.
“The NBA family is heartbroken by the loss of life and the devastation caused by the flooding across the Texas Hill Country,” the statement read. “Our thoughts are with all those affected by this tragedy, and we extend our deepest gratitude to the heroic first responders and volunteers.”
The funds will go toward urgent needs and sustained recovery for the hardest-hit families and communities.
“Amid so much sorrow, we are inspired by the strength of the Texas community as it comes together during this incredibly difficult time,” the league said.
This donation adds to a growing wave of support from across the sports world, including a $1 million pledge from the Houston Astros and a combined $1.5 million from the Houston Texans, Dallas Cowboys and the NFL Foundation. The Texas Rangers organization also announced it was providing $1 million to support short-term and long-term relief.
