Motorcyclist killed when wreck sent him into oncoming traffic on Westheimer

Police say the motorcycle rider heading westbound collided with a car that was crossing multiple lanes of traffic, sending him into the eastbound lanes.

HOUSTON — A motorcyclist is dead following a violent three-vehicle crash late Monday night on Westheimer Road in west Houston. The Houston Police Department is now investigating what led to the wreck.

According to Sgt. Dallas with HPD, officers were called to the scene on Westheimer east of Dairy Ashford just before 11 p.m. Investigators say a white Toyota was attempting to cross four lanes of traffic to get to a left-turn lane when it was struck by a motorcycle also heading westbound.

“The motorcycle struck the front left corner panel of the Toyota and it sent it into oncoming traffic,” Sgt. Dallas said.

That’s where the motorcycle rider was hit head-on by the driver of a Honda.

The motorcyclist was ejected from the bike and pronounced dead at the scene by the Houston Fire Department. Police believe the rider was a man between 20 and 30 years old, but his identity wasn’t released.

The driver of the Honda Accord was not seriously hurt but was checked out by the Houston Fire Department and was driven by a friend to a nearby hospital.

Police say the Toyota driver stayed at the scene and is cooperating with investigators. Sgt. Dallas said there were no immediate signs of intoxication and speed wasn’t a factor.

At this point, officers believe the Toyota driver is likely at fault.

“We do believe that there might have been an improper lane change and so she was trying to come across lanes of traffic without ensuring the safety of making sure that lane was safe,” Sgt. Dallas said.

The Harris County District Attorney’s Office has been contacted, but it’s still unclear whether any charges will be filed.

No other injuries were reported.

The investigation remains ongoing.
