Some residents were so trapped they had to cancel their doctor appointments. Others couldn’t leave their apartments at all.
MISSOURI CITY, Texas — A senior living apartment complex in Missouri City now has two working elevators after residents endured months without proper access to upper floors, forcing many disabled and medically vulnerable tenants to take the stairs or remain stranded in their apartments.
The Jubilee’s elevator problems had persisted for months before residents reached out to local news for help. Many tenants at the facility are disabled or have medical conditions that made climbing stairs difficult or impossible.
The residents say one of the elevators was back in service last week, and now they have two.
The restoration of elevator service marks a significant improvement for residents who had been severely impacted by the outage. Some tenants had been stranded on upper floors for months, unable to leave their apartments and forced to cancel doctor’s appointments due to the lack of accessible transportation within the building.
One resident expressed gratitude for the news coverage that helped bring attention to the issue.
“It wasn’t for me because I can walk up and down the stairs, but there are people that couldn’t, but this is a big help of getting help for somebody other than me,” said Ms. Myrtle. “And I appreciate you guys so much, you just don’t know.”
Beyond the elevator repairs, the building is also addressing other maintenance issues. Work crews are currently fixing damage from Hurricane Beryl, including painting and installing new baseboards throughout the facility.
According to Ms. Myrtle, the building’s owner plans to visit soon for a town hall-style meeting with residents, suggesting ongoing efforts to address tenant concerns and building maintenance issues.
