AUSTIN (KXAN) — Three people, including a child, died after a shooting occurred in the parking lot of a north Austin Target Monday afternoon.
2:15 p.m.
Just after 2 p.m., the Austin Police Department responded to a shooting at the Target located at 8601 Research Blvd.
According to police, officers found three people with gunshot wounds in the parking lot. The shooting did not occur inside the store, APD said. A fourth person was treated for unrelated injuries, according to Austin-Travis County EMS.
The suspect stole a vehicle from the scene, drove away and crashed, according to APD. The suspect then stole another vehicle and fled the scene of the crash.
Around 3 p.m.
Police shut down part of the southbound MoPac Frontage Road at the second scene, where the suspect crashed the stolen vehicle.
KXAN was at that second scene, off the frontage road between Executive Center Drive and Anderson Lane, where a black SUV had crashed into several parked vehicles and was resting on top of another.
APD shut down part of that frontage for a time Monday afternoon.
3:34 p.m.
Police share that a suspect has been detained, and two people were pronounced dead. The scene was still active, and the investigation was ongoing at this time.
Officers apprehended the suspect about 18 miles from the shooting scene, in the 2400 block of La Casa Drive, after police received a call in the area, according to Austin Police Chief Lisa Davis.
3:55 p.m.
Police ask people who were parked in the parking lot at the time of the shooting to find alternate transportation away from the scene, as the cars in the parking lot were considered part of an active crime scene.
9:30 p.m.
APD says vehicles left in the Target parking lot are cleared for pickup starting at 10 p.m.
10:22 a.m. Tuesday
APD identifies Ethan Nieneker, 32, as the suspect.
APD had previously shared that the suspect had a history of “struggles with mental health.” Records related to Nieneker show a 2017 conviction on a felony charge of assault causing bodily injury to a family member.
APD said it will hold a press conference around 2 p.m. Tuesday, which KXAN will livestream. More details about the shooting are expected at that time.
