A man was shot dead while working outside a convenience store in Houston early Wednesday, police report.

HOUSTON — A man was shot and killed early Wednesday morning while working outside a convenience store, according to the Houston Police Department.

HPD Lt. R. Willkens said the shooting happened around 12:40 a.m. Calumet Street just east of Highway 288

The victim, described as a man in his early 30s, was pressure washing stainless steel kitchen equipment outside the store, which also includes a restaurant, when a silver or gray truck pulled into the parking lot.

According to surveillance video, the victim walked up to the vehicle and exchanged words with the driver.

“It doesn’t even look like it’s heated… we’re not real sure what was going on,” Lt. Willkens said.

Moments later, the suspect got out of the truck, fired at the victim at point-blank range, then drove away, police said.

The victim died at the scene. His brother, who was inside the store at the time, found him and called the police.

Investigators said they are reviewing surveillance video and are confident they will identify the suspect. Anyone with information or video is urged to contact HPD Homicide.
