A man died Tuesday morning after being pulled from the water in Galveston. A woman was also pulled from the water. She is still alive.
GALVESTON, Texas — A man died and a woman was taken to the hospital on Tuesday after they were pulled from the water in Galveston overnight.
Galveston Beach Patrol officials said the 18-year-olds were pulled from the Gulf waters along Seawall Boulevard near 42nd Street on Monday.
The woman is alive, but as of this posting, she was in the ICU.
Authorities said the man and woman were co-workers who were at the beach with two other co-workers.
Officials said the pair entered the water around 2:45 a.m. Witnesses said they saw them enter the water but didn’t resurface for several minutes. The witnesses ran to a nearby emergency room and called 911 to get help.
First responders with the Galveston Island Beach Patrol, Galveston firefighters and Galveston police officers arrived at the scene to help with the search.
The missing woman was found first, near the 42nd Street rock groin. First responders started CPR, and she was taken to a nearby emergency room.
About 15 minutes later, the man was found about two blocks away in the water near the 43rd Street lifeguard tower. He was unconscious and taken to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Swimming was prohibited in the area where they went into the water. City ordinances are in place to prevent people from swimming in areas near rock groins, which are jetties that extend from the seawall into the water to prevent erosion.
Swimming at night in the Gulf isn’t illegal, but officials don’t recommend doing it, and there are signs along the beach that alert swimmers to the dangers.
