Houston police arrested Aaron Bartholomew Sheehan, 40, on Tuesday. He’s charged with murder.
HOUSTON — A manhunt is apparently over after police said they arrested a suspect who they said killed an elderly man in east Houston last week.
Aaron Bartholomew Sheehan, 40, is charged with murder, according to the Houston Police Department. He was taken into custody on Tuesday and booked into the Harris County Jail.
Sheehan is accused of stabbing 77-year-old Anival Patricio Elvir Ortiz to death as Ortiz was riding his bike to work on Thursday, Aug. 7.
According to investigators, around 5:45 a.m. that morning, Sheehan came out from behind a fence and attacked Ortiz as he was riding his bike on a trail along Harrisburg Boulevard. Surveillance video showed Sheehan approach Ortiz and stab him in the back.
Authorities said Ortiz kept riding his bike for about 10 minutes after being attacked.
“He might not have realized his injuries were so severe, and he just kept riding his bike,” HPD Sgt. Mark Holbrook said.
When he got to work, he told his co-workers that a man had hit him on his ride in. Then, he collapsed. He was pronounced dead at the hospital.
Shortly after the attack, Sheehan was seen at a METRORail station. Police released surveillance images of him the day after Ortiz’s death and asked the public for help to identify him. Five days later, Sheehan was arrested.
Ortiz’s family set up a GoFundMe account to help with funeral expenses.
