The woman was found lying unresponsive in a parking lot and was taken to a local hospital, but later died, officials said.
FORT WORTH, Texas — A man was arrested this week, accused of beating a woman to death on a street in Fort Worth, officials said.
Police were called to the 900 block of S. Jennings Street in Fort Worth shortly before 9 a.m. on July 9 regarding a man allegedly stomping on the head of a woman, according to an arrest warrant affidavit.
Officers arrived to find a woman severely beaten and lying unresponsive in a parking lot, police said.
Police said a rock was lying on the woman’s head, and officers believed the woman had been beaten with it, according to the affidavit. The woman was taken to a hospital “in grave condition,” according to police, and officers found out July 14 that she had died.
Officers found the man, identified as 47-year-old Steven Black, a short distance from where they found the woman and tried to detain him, but he fled, according to the affidavit.
When officers caught up to Black and detained him, one of the officers noticed he had what looked like bloodstains on his legs, and Black refused to say where they’d come from, police said.
Two witnesses reported seeing Black repeatedly kick the woman, and another witness reported seeing Black carrying a rock, then drop it and try to hide himself when officers arrived, according to the affidavit.
It’s unclear whether or not Black and the woman knew each other.
Black was initially arrested for aggravated assault and a parole violation, officials said.
Black was booked into the Tarrant County Jail and is charged with murder and aggravated assault causing serious bodily injury and a warrant for a parole violation, jail records showed.
