Man accused of killing girlfriend and unborn child before dumping them in a bayou faces judge

Capital murder suspect Kevin Faux waived his right to a bond hearing as alleged victim Ashanti Allen’s family watched nearby.

HOUSTON, Texas — Nearly a month to the day since former fugitive Kevin Faux was captured near New Orleans, the 24-year-old was in Harris County criminal court for a hearing about a possible bond which he decided to waive.

“That was the right thing for him to do,” said Teresa Gaines Colbert, the mother of Ashanti Allen, the woman Faux is accused of killing.

Colbert attended the court proceeding with family members who brought fans with Allen’s photo on them.

Allen’s unborn child with Faux was already named Jaxon at the time of her murder.

“We’re taking it day by day,” Colbert said.

Allen’s body was found along a bayou in Chimney Rock Park days after her family last saw her.

Police say the 23-year-old was strangled and had a cord wrapped tightly around her neck. Faux was charged with capital murder and extradited back from Louisiana following his arrest by U.S. Marshals.

We previously discovered that Faux was given a plea deal for a prior family violence charge just weeks before Allen’s murder, which resulted in an early release from jail.

“We need to re-evaluate how domestic violence cases are handled,” Colbert said.  “That’s the first step we need to do. I reacted, now it’s time to proact, so this won’t happen to anyone else.”

In Texas, capital murder suspects do not have an automatic right to bond, and we’re told waiving a hearing in a case like this is not necessarily uncommon.

“But it was our client’s desire to waive that hearing,” said defense attorney Anthony Osso.  “He’s not interested in having a bond set. He understands he’ll remain at no bond, and he absolutely has no problem with that.”

Meanwhile, Allen’s family believes Faux is where he belongs for the rest of his life. They previously stated they’re in favor of the death penalty in this case.
