Major websites face outages due to Cloudflare issue

It’s unclear what caused the outage and an investigation is underway to fix the problems.

SAN FRANCISCO — From Google, Character.ai and Amazon to Discord, Spotify and Etsy, multiple websites were experiencing some variation of outages on Thursday. 

Thousands of reports were filed for the respective sites at DownDetector, flagging the outages as they happened. 

The outages seemed to mostly occur around the same time — roughly 2 p.m. ET on Thursday. 

Cloudflare, an American business that provides other companies with various services like cybersecurity and DDoS mitigation among others, said they were “investigating an issue causing Access authentication to fail” around the same time. 

“We are starting to see services recover. We still expect to see intermittent errors across the impacted services as systems handle retried and caches are filled,” said Cloudflare on their outage page

It’s unclear what caused the outage. 

Is Discord down?

On apps like Discord, the gaming and chatting platform, users may be experiencing a variety of issues from attachments not sending to being unable to use activities. Discord says they’re working with their provider to “get to recovery.”

Is Amazon not working?

Some Amazon customers were experiencing issues Thursday. 

DownDetector received nearly 6,000 outage reports for Amazon on Thursday.  

What’s wrong with Spotify?

More than 40,000 reports came in through DownDecector of Spotify users experiencing a variety of issues, including problems with playing podcasts to playlists appearing empty.
