Lago Vista ISD approves new budget

AUSTIN (KXAN) — Lago Vista Independent School District passed its updated version of the House Bill 2 bill, which was signed into law by the governor.

HB2, which the 89th Texas Legislature passed, aims to support Texas public schools by providing additional funding and resources.

This new updated version of HB2 brings positive change, as well as struggles the District will have to face.

“We are grateful that the final version of HB2 provides meaningful raises for our hardworking teachers and staff. This investment in our staff is well-deserved and appreciated,” said Lago Vista ISD.

The bill will give full-time teachers with 3 to 4 years of experience an increase of $4,000, while full-time teachers with 5 years of experience will receive $8,000.

However, HB2 does not factor in inflation rates that are causing Lago Vista ISD to increase spending. In order to balance out spending, certain budget cuts must be made.

LVISD said it would have to “reduce spending by approximately $600,000 for the 2025–2026 school year”.

Ways LVISD will work to reach this target:

  • Reduce staff through attrition (not replacing some vacant positions)
  • Move to an 8-period day at the high school
  • Adjust the Gifted & Talented pullout schedule
  • Make targeted reductions to supply budgets

LVISD said it already made budget cuts to reduce spending during the 2024-2025 school year to ensure financial stability, so this is just continuing through the coming school year.
