WASHINGTON — Kroger recently announced plans to close around 60 stores across the U.S. over the next 18 months, with some locations shutting down in a matter of weeks.
The grocery store chain’s CEO said the closures are part of an effort to streamline operations and reinvest in the customer experience.
Kroger is the nation’s largest supermarket chain, with 2,731 stores in 35 states and the District of Columbia. It operates stores under multiple brand names, including Smith’s, Ralphs, King Soopers and Fred Meyer.
While a Kroger spokesperson has said the company would not be providing a full list of the closing stores, dozens of locations that are shutting down have been identified through local media reports and labor union announcements in several states.
