Juneteenth Celebration at Emancipation Park rescheduled

The Juneteenth celebration that was postponed last month has a new date.

HOUSTON — A special “Juneteenth in July” celebration featuring Grammy-winning artists and a musical tribute to the late Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee will take place July 12, with free admission for all attendees. The original celebration was postponed due to the weather.

The event will honor Jackson Lee’s legacy of advocacy and her instrumental role in establishing Juneteenth as a national holiday through performances by renowned artists, including Yolanda Adams, George Clinton backed by the Juneteenth House Band, Stokley of Mint Condition, The Hamiltones, and Chris Dave and The Drumhedz.

The celebration begins at 2 p.m. with marketplace activities and live performances on The Blessing Stage, followed by the main program and musical tribute concert at 4 p.m. Se7en the Poet will host the event, with music provided by KTSU’s DJ Chilly Bill Smith.

The event organizers describe “Juneteenth in July” as “more than a concert—it’s a tribute to heritage, resilience, and community.” The celebration aims to bring together diverse audiences for “a powerful evening of live music, culture, and unity as we come together to celebrate freedom and honor the legacy of Juneteenth.”

The late Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee played a pivotal role in the federal recognition of Juneteenth. Her advocacy helped establish June 19 as a national holiday commemorating the end of slavery in the United States.

The free admission event welcomes all community members to participate in what organizers call “this unforgettable night of soul, rhythm, and celebration” and “this one-of-a-kind experience.”
