Jim Nill makes history with third GM of the Year win

This is the first time a general manager has achieved the feat.

DALLAS — For the third consecutive year, Dallas Stars General Manager Jim Nill has won the Jim Gregory General Manager of the Year award — the first GM to win three times in a row.

The award was presented to Nill, who has been the Stars’ GM since 2013, in a special way Thursday night as his family surprised him at a scouting dinner ahead of the 2025 NHL Draft.

Watch the surprise below:

The NHL’s top GM award recognizes the strategic and organizational leadership behind team success. Nill’s latest win adds another milestone to a 12-year tenure that has transformed the Stars into a perennial contender. Under his reign, Dallas has reached the Western Conference Final for the third straight season.

“Capturing the award for three consecutive seasons speaks to the diligence and boldness of Jim and his staff,” Dallas Stars Owner and Governor Tom Gaglardi said in a news release. “Our window for championship contention continues to be wide open thanks to his ability to not only draft and develop but take advantage of opportunities to add key pieces via free agency or trade. Beyond being a tremendous general manager, Jim is a great person and is highly respected across our League. I couldn’t ask for a better individual to represent the Dallas Stars organization.”

Since taking over in 2013, Nill has led Dallas to the playoffs in eight seasons, including a trip to the Stanley Cup Final in 2020 and four Western Conference Final appearances. His overall record with the club stands at 505-327-113.

With three straight GM of the Year honors and a roster built for long-term success, Nill has positioned the Stars to remain a force in the NHL’s championship race for years to come.
