The University of the Incarnate Word’s Extended Run Players (ERP) this Thursday and Friday will present Spoon River Anthology, excerpts from Edgar Lee Masters’ series of free-verse poems published in 1915.
Spoon Riveris a fictional Midwestern town. However, each poem in the book represents a thinly veiled autobiography of people from Masters’ real hometown of Lewistown, Illinois.
Scandalous in its day, the work contradicts a whitewashed version of rural America, exploring scandals, lost loves, hidden desires and homespun hypocrisy.
Proceeds from the ERP’s performance of Spoon River Anthology benefit a scholarship fund for promising theater students at the university.
$20 suggested donation, 2:30 p.m. Thursday, May 14, and Friday, May 15, The Cheever Theatre, University of the Incarnate Word, 4301 Broadway, (210) 829-3810, uiw.edu.
