‘I was hearing screaming’ | Residents describe moments when an explosion sparked a fire at an Oak Cliff apartment

Officials have confirmed four injuries in the explosion that occurred May 28 at The Clyde Apartment Complex, but there could be more victims.

DALLAS — Nearly 100 firefighters are responding to an explosion that caused a massive fire at an apartment building in Dallas’ Oak Cliff neighborhood called The Clyde.

Residents and neighbors described to WFAA hearing a loud boom that blew out windows.

“It was actually crazy,” one neighbor named Marcella told WFAA. “My body is vibrating right now as we speak. I was so scared, I literally jumped out of my bed. I peeked out of the window to see what was going on. It scared me, I started crying and everything.”

Marcella said she ran away from the scene.

“I took off,” Marcella said. “I was hearing screaming.”

The incident was reported around 12:47 p.m. at a two-story apartment complex called The Clyde, located at the intersection of Patton Avenue and East 9th Street, Dallas Fire-Rescue said.

Another resident named Ariana described waking up to the sound of windows blowing out. “It was not a sight I wanted to see when I woke up,” Ariana said.

A man who identified himself as Mr. Brown said he smelled gas and felt the apartment shake. Brown said when he first saw the scene, he noticed a girl climbing out of the debris. All he could think of was to help save the girl.

“She was shocked,” Brown said. “She was shocked, and all I heard was that she was saying her mom and her brother were still inside.”

At least four people have been taken to the hospital, and their condition is unknown, officials said. There could be more victims, depending on the number of people home at the time, officials said.

During a Thursday afternoon press conference, Dallas Fire-Rescue officials did not confirm any fatalities, but said the number of fatalities remains unknown. DFR said they are conducting primary searches for other victims.

A man identifying himself as Mr. Terrence believes he lost his animals in the fire.

“They probably burnt up, man,” Terrence said. “Two dogs, three cats.”

Emily, another resident, recalled hearing a commotion and having to pull her dog and sister from the apartment.
