HOUSTON — A Houston police officer was injured early Friday morning in a crash along Highway 290 near Hollister, according to early reports from police dispatch.

The incident happened around 5 a.m. on the westbound Highway 290 frontage road, where emergency radio traffic indicated the officer was trapped inside their vehicle and was heard urgently requesting an ambulance.

Initial information from HPD command described the officer as injured and trapped, but did not confirm any other victims.

This is a developing story. We will update as soon as HPD releases more confirmed details about the officer’s condition and any additional injuries.

Alternate routes for morning commuters

If you’re westbound on the Highway 290 main lanes:

  • Stay on the main lanes of 290 past Hollister to avoid the blocked frontage.
  • Exit at Bingle Road or Tidwell Road further west if needed.

If you’re already on the feeder approaching Hollister:

  • Exit early at W. 34th Street or Mangum Road, then use local roads such as:
    • W. 34th Street westbound to Bingle Road southbound
    • Mangum Road northbound to W. Little York or Hempstead Highway
These can reconnect with 290 beyond the crash site.

Coming from Loop 610 North, trying to head west:

  • Use Hempstead Highway westbound as a parallel route.
  • Alternate: Take I-10 West from 610, then north on Beltway 8 to reconnect with US 290.

If you’re eastbound and heading toward 610:

  • No impact on the eastbound main lanes or feeder was reported, but we expect rubbernecking delays. Consider using Hempstead Highway to approach 610 from the north side.
