HOUSTON — Heads up, history buffs! Your chance to see important U.S. documents, including an original engraving of the Declaration of Independence from 1823, is coming to the Houston Museum of Natural Science.
It’s a part of the “Freedom Plane National Tour: Documents That Forged a Nation” series that’s only making stops in eight cities across the nation.
The Houston leg of the tour will run from May 8 through May 25 at the Houston Museum of Natural Science. It’s free and open to the public, but Friday, May 8 is reserved for the museum’s members. Public tickets will be available starting Saturday, May 9.
“The National Archives Foundation is helping to bring not only founding-era documents themselves, but the patriotism, celebration, and wonder that they inspire, to Americans everywhere — from sea to shining sea,” said National Archives Foundation Chief Executive Officer Patrick M. Madden.
What’s on display
Some of the documents that will be on display include the following:
- An original engraving of the Declaration of Independence, 1823
- The Articles of Association, 1774
- George Washington’s, Alexander Hamilton’s, and Aaron Burr’s Oaths of Allegiance, 1778
- Treaty of Paris, 1783

According to organizers, this event is the first time these documents and records are traveling together. They are being transported by a Boeing 737 with a special “Freedom Plane” paint job.
