Houston’s Alief residents regain water after 24-hour disruption

Houston Public Works crews spent hours repairing a water leak on Wellington Park Drive that impacted multiple neighborhoods.

HOUSTON — Homes and businesses in Houston’s Alief area finally have running water after some residents said they were left without it for 24 hours.

City leaders told KHOU 11 they want to ensure residents get appropriately informed about a timeline for repairs.

Luis Antonio Gonzalez and his family had their day disrupted.

“We can’t do anything, can’t use the restroom, can’t take a shower, or cook,” Gonzalez said. He started noticing issues with the water in his home along Wellington Park Drive.

“When you come out, you see all the water…on the street,” Gonzalez said.

“Hot conditions, aged infrastructure, sometimes can be a cocktail for disaster,” Houston City Council member Tiffany Thomas told KHOU 11.

She said she saw posts on X that water service was disrupted. Her office email inbox had some emails on Sunday morning asking about the water disruption, so she reached out to Houston Public Works.

Public Works confirmed to KHOU 11 that a crew was making leak repairs outside a home on Wellington Park Drive. Service was restored late on Sunday afternoon. Water main leaks, unfortunately, are a common but disruptive issue.

“This is no different from water leaks throughout the city, Houston has aging infrastructure. This is something we consistently talk about,” Thomas said.

She confirmed she plans to speak with Public Works about communication regarding water service disruption. She said she has quarterly meetings with public works.

According to the City of Houston’s 311 map, the recent leak was reported as early as Friday. The map also shows other tickets for water leaks on the same street that were submitted months ago. Residents believe a long-term solution is needed for the area.

“I think they have to replace the whole line because it’s not the first time they have a leak over here,” Gonzalez said.
