Special events and wildlife activities
As part of the 713 Day celebration, the Zoo will host Houston-based community partners, giving guests insight into how their visit supports local wildlife conservation efforts, including protecting the Attwater’s prairie chicken, a critically endangered Texas bird species.
Animals will also join the fun with Houston-themed enrichment activities during the Meet the Keeper Chats. Visitors can also enjoy live music performances while exploring the zoo grounds.
A chance to help global wildlife, too
Guests attending the 713 Day weekend are encouraged to bring unused handheld electronics, such as old cell phones and chargers, to donate for recycling.
The zoo explained that these devices contain tantalum, a metal derived from coltan, which is destructively mined in central Africa, affecting wildlife like chimpanzees, gorillas, and okapi. By recycling electronics at the zoo’s main entrance drop-off, visitors can help protect these vulnerable animal habitats.
What is 713 Day?
713 Day is Houston’s unofficial holiday, celebrating the city’s original telephone area code, established in 1947. The number has since become a symbol of local pride and community spirit.
