Houston Mayor John Whitmire said the goal is to reduce the number of reported traffic issues on the busy freeways, like speeding and road rage.
HOUSTON — The City of Houston is rolling out a new initiative aimed at keeping drivers on two of the city’s busiest freeways safe.
The initiative focuses on traffic enforcement along I-45 and I-59.
Houston Mayor John Whitmire said the goal is to reduce the number of reported traffic issues on the busy freeways, like speeding and road rage. This comes after the mayor said he’s heard countless concerns from Houstonians about irresponsible driving.
According to Houston Police Department data, in 2025 alone there have been at least 30 reported cases of road rage and aggravated assault on the targeted freeways.
“As we continue to build up the number of HPD officers, we’re going to focus more and more on traffic enforcement with increased recruiting and retention of HPD officers,” Whitmire said. “You’re going to see more enforcement. We want to improve traffic safety in Houston, Texas.”
Houston police told KHOU 11 the initiative will involve more than just enhanced enforcement, but also community outreach.
Police ask that drivers continue to report aggressive behavior on the roads.
