Houston residents face AC and rat issues at apartments

One woman living at the Summit at Hirsch Road Apartments said she had no AC for several days, while another resident claims there were issues with rats.

HOUSTON — Residents at a northeast Houston complex will soon get some repairs they say are overdue.

One woman living at the Summit at Hirsch Road Apartments near the Eastex Freeway said she had no AC for several days. Other residents claim there were issues with maintenance and rats. Management and property owners told KHOU 11 News they are addressing those concerns.

One resident said they couldn’t keep cool.

“I have to leave my house to go to my family house to go get some air,” Yunetta Woods said.

She said her air conditioning went out, and was given a window AC unit. With fans set up in her living room, the thermostat still read 99 degrees on Tuesday.

Another resident in the complex has a different problem.

“I’m the unit that stays catching rats, I’ve caught over 30 or 50 rats since I’ve been here. I don’t know where they’re coming from,” Taydra Tyson said. She provided photos to KHOU 11 of rats she claims were in her son’s closet.

KHOU 11 reached out to apartment management, who said they were unaware of these photos.

Management claims no rodents were found in previous walkthroughs of Tyson’s unit just a month ago. Additionally, management states that Tyson denied pest control from entering her unit.

Other residents in the complex are dealing with different problems.

Dejeanette Eze claims an AC leak has created mold in her apartment.

“Besides vacuuming the water, like I said, besides wiping it down with bleach, spraying down with kilt, I feel like that’s not really fixing the problem,” Eze said.

According to management, the leak was first reported on August 15 and was fixed the following day. They said the leak reoccurred on August 30 and was fixed again.

Management claims no mold was detected when inspecting Eze’s unit, but Eze claims the persistent issues affect her and her son.

“We both have compromised immune systems. So we shouldn’t be living and breathing like this. I cough every day, I have to blow my nose every day, I’m very congested, and it’s not okay,” Eze said.

Apartment management claims that none of the three units had a history of work orders. We were told the AC in Woods’ unit would be fixed by the end of the day on Wednesday.

Following our visit, activist Candice Matthews posted on Facebook, saying that the repairs tenants had been waiting for have finally been addressed.

According to property management, they just inspected 100 percent of all units at the complex here in July, with no issues reported.

However, they do plan on hosting a meeting next week with residents to educate them on placing work orders, so a solution to these issues can be reached quickly.
