So far, more than 300 citations have been written along some of Houston’s busiest freeways.
HOUSTON, Texas — In city that’s frequently led the nation in road rage incidents, KHOU 11 News has routinely covered stories with victims.
“I just felt blood running down my back,” one told us in 2023.
He and his car were shot on the 610 Loop which is now an area of focus in a new Houston Police initiative along with I-45, 59, and Highway 288.
“Our main focus is the aggressive driving and road rage,” said Houston Police Captain Jason Rosemon.
He said the department is using data driven statistics to target specific areas where incidents tend to occur.
So far, officers have written more than 300 citations since launching the effort last week.
“Mainly for moving violations, following too closely, driving on the shoulder, no seat belt,” said Rosemon. “Also texting while driving.”
A KHOU 11 News crew spotted an officer Tuesday morning in one of the targeted areas.
HPD is also getting assistance from other agencies like DPS and Constable’s offices.
Rosemon said mere visibility can have an impact on potentially dangerous driving.
“We’re trying to stop it before is happens,” said Rosemon.
Right now, there’s no time limit for the new initiative, but it will be ongoing and may occur any day of the week. We asked HPD about whether this surge could potentially impact response times elsewhere.
We were told this is strictly a traffic enforcement division initiative. Patrol officers are still running higher priority calls.
