Houston police target highway violence, issue citations

The initiative includes targeting highway violence on I-45, Highway 59, Highway 288 and the South Loop.

HOUSTON — The Houston Police Department is sharing the latest results from its crackdown on highway violence launched earlier this month.

The initiative includes targeting highway violence on I-45, Highway 59, Highway 288 and the South Loop.

Last week, officers wrote 170 citations on Highway 288. The previous week, officers wrote about 300 tickets while patrolling I-45 and Highway 59.

Houston Mayor John Whitmire said the goal is to reduce the number of reported traffic issues on the busy freeways, like speeding and road rage. This comes after the mayor said he’s heard countless concerns from Houstonians about irresponsible driving.

According to Houston Police Department data, in 2025 alone, there have been at least 30 reported cases of road rage and aggravated assault on the targeted freeways.

Houston police told KHOU 11 News the initiative will involve more than just enhanced enforcement, but also community outreach.
